Common Bathing Tubs

The point of bathing tubs is to soak. When used for this primary purpose, you can get a deeper than average tub. A bath designed for soaking will not usually have a shower attachment or jet combinations. The most commonly known tubs are the Roman and the Greek tubs. The Roman tub is a sunken bath, although there are different interpretations of what Roman baths really are. A Greek tub is shorter in length, but allows the individual to sink into the water up to the neck. The Greek style tub is convenient for the customer who would like a deeper experience, but is short on bathroom space.

The more popular types of bathing tubs are built-in tubs. These include the Alcove bathtub, the drop-in bathtub, and the corner bath. The Alcove is just as it's name suggests. It is virtually enclosed with an opening in the front to allow access. The drop-in tub is the type where one must step down into it, rather than stepping up and over. A corner tub is a type of drop-in tub, but is set in a corner of the bathroom or perhaps out on a deck. Most drop-ins will not have a shower fixture because they sit alone and are open.

There are also freestanding bathing tubs which include the claw foot or a pedestal tub. Claw foot tubs offer the most comforting bath available. They have been popular since the early 1800's, but were even more popular before the built-in tubs of the 1900's. The claw foot tub has feet to stand on, but the pedestal tub sits on a base. Pedestal tubs are easy to install, and the plumbing is exposed which makes maintenance easier to perform if necessary. A drawback to the pedestal tub is that is it less common so manufacturers do not provide as many options as with other tubs.

Whether you purchase a bathtub to perform the daily ritual of cleanliness, for a relaxing escape, or because you want to add character to your bathroom, the options are vast. There are many brands and various styles no matter the individual needs and desires. Explore all that is available before making a decision.
